Carmela, ice cream to beat the after summer heat

The Hollywood Farmers' market on Sunday was chock full of the most delicious fruits and vegetables. What a feast for my eyes, nose and my stomach. I bought fresh, sweet corn and made corn chowder; with heirloom tomatoes I made gazpacho and an out-of-this-world tomato sauce. For dessert, creamy Carmela ice cream.

How can you go wrong with these flavors? Salted caramel, brown sugar vanilla bean, cucumber, lemon basil, they change their flavors based on the season and source the fresh ingredients locally at farmers markets. They have great flavors and are environmentally conscious. Their packaging is bio-compostable, made from sugar cane.

The dynamic duo running Carmela are ice cream artisans Jessica Mortarotti and Zachary Cox. Ice cream is their canvas to mix nuts, teas, fruits, herbs and spices. They make the stuff fresh at their West Hollywood home with their Italian Carpigiani machine.

You can get Carmela at the Hollywood Farmers' Market on Sunday and in the South Pasadena Farmers' Market on Thursday afternoons You can also buy it on their website. Restaurateurs around town are already on to them. You can find Carmela at the newly opened Cafe Wa S, Tasca Wine Bar, Auntie Em's Kitchen and Bar on 4 at Neiman Marcus.
