No Movie Required: Westside Tavern downstairs from The Landmark on Pico

Our meal was thoroughly excellent at the Westside Tavern on Pico Blvd., in the same complex as the Landmark Theaters. The best part about the the restaurant, besides the great food, was that special restaurant feeling it had. You know what I'm talking about. It typically comes from a combination of friendly service, comfortable decor, and a passion for food and the dining experience, one that originates with the chef and trickles down to every person working at the restaurant. Westside Tavern felt like one of those places where a meal turns into a special evening. That's what happened to me and Ruby when we went there last week for dinner, and dined for (wow) almost 3 hours.

There's a huge menu with just about everything you can think of. Appetizers, Soups/Greens, Sandwiches (including a tempting Cheese Burger with Wisconsin cheddar and caramelized onions on an egg bun), and a well rounded selection of Entrees. The huge chalkboard on the wall features daily specials direct from the farmer's market.

I was famished. I'd just come from spinning class. Somehow that helped me justify my big meal. Ruby was in the mood for comfort food too, so I had a partner in indulgence. We started with the Creamy Artichoke Gratin on sourdough toast. It was enough for two, even three, although I could have devoured the whole thing myself. Next we ordered two entrees and split them. A white fish with sugar-sweet carrots from the chalkboard and Prime Beef Short Rib Pot Roast (a mouthful) from the menu. Both delicious and cooked to perfection, the Pot Roast with dreamy, mashed potatoes and carrots was simply extraordinary, comfort food prepared with elegance.
Thoroughly satisfied, we had no need for dessert, nor a movie.
