Good Vibes for Santa Monica at Golden Mean Cafe on Wilshire
Golden Mean Cafe, the new vegetarian restaurant in Santa Monica, on the same block as Huckleberry and Santa Monica Seafood, is AOK in my book. The friendly owner, Aaron Glassman, created Golden Mean Cafe to bring good, vegetarian food to Santa Monica and create a community spot where like minded people can hang out.
Named for the principle of harmony and balance, Golden Mean Cafe was created with love and sustainability in mind: the eco-friendly plaster walls are infused with crushed quartz crystals and incense, they used water based paint and LED lighting. Even the the plates are bamboo. Overall, Golden Mean Cafe has a good vibe.
Downstairs Chef Brit Hawley (previously at Real Food Daily) creates salads, sandwiches, wraps, gluten free pizzas and baked goods. I loved the Boston Cream Cupcake ($2.75) made from scratch with no refined sugar or dairy, organic whole grain flour (spelt and barley) and organic chocolate. There's something so satisfying about eating a delicious dessert that's also healthy.
The Middle East Wrap with baked falafel, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and tzatziki in a spinach tortilla was fine. I usually prefer falafel fried, although my body would probably thank me (if it could) for eating baked ones. Unsurprising, the light and crispy Pop Chips, compressed with heat, not baked nor fried, vanished quickly from my plate. I could easily eat a whole bag of them.
Upstairs there's a groovy loft with cushions and books for sale. There's future plans for live music on weekends and community events. Next time I'll try the coconut milkshake that debuts towards the end of next week.
