Fashionista Food + Lab in West Hollywood

OK, let's talk about a great sandwich. Start with a warm piece of chicken Wiernerschnitzel, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside (just like the owner used to make in her restaurant in Salzburg, Austria). Put it on a fresh Ciabatta from Bread Bar, slather Lingonberry Chutney on the top, Aioli below. Oh what a great combo! I was going to eat half and save the rest for dinner. Before I knew it, I'd eaten the entire sandwich. Good stuff.

Food + Lab Cafe & Marketplace on Santa Monica Blvd. is open for breakfast and lunch. The small place packs a lot of flavor. There's a wide selection of gourmet sandwiches($8-9.50) and a little of everything else including salads, cheese, charcuterie, soups, and baked goods from Bread Bar.

There's mostly outdoor dining, both in front and back, with a couple tables inside. They must do a large take-out business: both times I've been there I've seen a lot of orders waiting to be picked up.

Esther Linsmayer and her son, Nino, own the business. Nino has an education in hotel admin and has worked in top East Coast restaurants. Esther was trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and for years owned a restaurant in Austria (hence a few good Austrian dishes are on the menu). She's known around town as "the fashion caterer" because of her catering biz for thousands of fashion shoots and fashionistas.

Alli411 Tips + Treats

1. Parking for take-out in back. Plenty of street parking (with meters) have been available every time I've been there.

2. New customers get 15% off first order. They were handing out postcards (above) when I was there. Print it up and bring it in.
