Yuri Truck Hits the Streets of LA

Yuri Truck probably sounds familiar because Kogi truck was parked in front Yuri Japanese Cafe on Melrose Ave. in Hollywood at least a couple of times in March. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. With the tip of a hat, Yuri Truck debuts on the streets of Los Angeles this week. Like Kogi you can follow them on Twitter at yuritruck.

There's three main items on the menu: Rolls, Bowls, and Teas. Yuri Rolls ($3) are spicy tuna rolls taken up a level. Sesame seeds and tempura sprinkles add extra texture and crunch, and the homemade teriyaki sauce boosts flavor. The fish was (thankfully) high quality at a reasonable price.

The Yuri Bowls ($5), or the new size Cups ($3), are a choice of brown, purple or white rice with either chicken, tofu or steak, and veggies. They were out of steak when I was there so I had half brown/purple rice and half chicken/tofu. Tofu was excellent, especially with the homemade teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds drizzled all over it. The green stuff you see is sesame leaf, a fresh flavor, so delish I could have eaten a whole plate of the salad alone.

I was a little skeptical about the teas and tried them anyway, on ice. The Yuri tea has a cherry blossom flavor that reminded me of peach tea. It was light, refreshing with a tinge of sweetness. The Young T is made with yuzu, a tart Japanese citrus. (I was told the Japanese use it for weight control). It was mighty tasty, sweet and sour. So good, I ended up having an extra serving it. Cocktail drinkers take note: this would be great with some vodka or rum in it.

I'm a little skeptical about eating sushi off of a truck (Can they really keep it fresh?), but am looking forward to trying those teas, especially in this coming summer heat :)

Hi Burumun: I'm not worried. They have refridgeration, just like ice cream trucks :)

Is the food the different from what they sell at their cafe?

Hi Abby: I think it's the same food.
