Sausage and Beer at Wurstküche

Just about every sausage you can think of is on the menu at Wurstküche, over 20 sausage varieties, including a few that will make you take a double take. The exotic section of the menu includes Rattlesnake, Rabbit with Jalapeno, and Alligator and Hickory Smoked Pork Andouille Sausage. As tempting as they were, I loved the Chicken Apple with Spices.

There are 3 soy based sausages so there's no need to leave your vegetarian friends at home. On the side, Belgian fries come with Blue Cheese Walnut and Bacon dipping sauce or just about any sauce you can imagine.

The beer selection is fantastic. Belgian, German and American on tap and bottled. The Blanche de Bruxelles went great with my sweet chicken sausage. There's also a large gourmet soda selection with fun flavors: Mr. Q Cumber Soda, Victorian Lemonade, and Sarsaparilla to name a few.

The large sun-filled back room has a laid back vibe and a selection of seating options: the long communal table in the center, the bar or smaller cafe tables. This is a great addition to the Arts District. I'll definitely be back.

Nickel for your thoughts, Nickel Diner

Just minutes after we sit down, a plate of 3 donut holes was delivered to our table. The flavors: strawberry, nutella and BACON, all really delicious, especially the bacon, an absolutely brilliant concoction. It's a similar taste to dipping bacon in maple syrup, one of my favorite breakfast treats. Basically, it's a glazed donut hole with a little bacon on top, nothing overwhelming, just the right amount of flavor.

With dessert taken care of, it was time to move on to lunch. The Big Time Cheddar Sandwich was a hearty grilled cheese with cheddar, tomato and bacon. The onion rings that came with it were crispy and addicting.

On the healthier side, the Stuffed Avocado was a vegetarian delight. A huge portion of quinoa salad came piled on a red cabbage leaf. Upon closer inspection, a perfectly ripe, sliced Haas avocado was hiding under the quinoa. The flavors and textures worked great together: soft, buttery avocado, crisp little quinoa balls, sweet, not-quite-firm corn kernals, soft black beans, diced red peppers, delicate squash, and a burst of fresh cilantro to round it out.

It was a satisfying Sunday lunch at the new, old-fashioned Nickel Diner; worth the trip downtown.

Church & State Opens Today

Restaurateur Steven Arroyo of Cobras & Matadors, Malo and 750 ml adds a french cafe to the list. Church & State opens today, downtown in the southern arts district. The casual spot will feature frenchy brasserie food.

Brasseries have been in vogue for over a year now. We have some great ones too: Anisette in Santa Monica, The Hall in West Hollywood. Thomas Keller will be opening up Bouchon in Beverly Hills in 2009, that will be fab!

I'm not a huge fan of Cobras & Matadors' food. Having lived in Spain, Cobras' tapas are a bit too Americanized for me. I do like the casual vibe of his restaurants though, and many people seem to like his restaurants. If you happen to go there, drop me a line and let me know how it is.
